Hello, and welcome back to another episode of the Money Clarity Podcast. I am your host, Lindsey Ciarrocca, and this week I'm going to bring you something a little bit different. So I want to start a series, it'll be a occasional random episode, where I talk about money thoughts that you're probably thinking but maybe not saying out loud.
So for each one of these episodes, I will take a thought, and I will say it out loud. Not because it's mine, maybe it is, but also because I hear these things in some form or, or another from almost every woman I work with. And if you've had this exact thought and never spoken these words out loud, these are for you, and I just want you to know you're not alone.
So here's the thought for this week: I make good money and have no idea where it goes. So maybe you've had this thought around the 26th, 27th, 28th of the month when you open your banking app and just kinda look at that number and say, "Where did it all go?" You know, it's a thought that comes back every month.
Where did all of my money go? I make good money. Where did it all go? You probably know the big stuff like your rent or your mortgage, maybe how much your car payment is, but it's the in-between stuff that just seems to take up money, just seems to evaporate into thin air. You know, it's a stop at a gas station here, a subscription that you forgot about and keep forgetting to cancel.
Maybe it was something you needed for the house or the kids. Dinner out because, let's be honest, you were just too tired to cook that night. None of these things feel like a decision or feel like a monumental decision in the moment. They are things that just happen, and then before you know it, it's the end of the month and the number in your bank account is somehow smaller than you expected again, just like last month.
The other part of it is that you feel like you should know , how to deal with money.
You're good at your job you're good at most other things in your life you might make decisions all day long that affect other people and again, you're good at it so why can't you figure out money?
Well, the good news is knowing where your money goes isn't a gene that you are or are not born with. It is something you can learn.
It's not a personality flaw. It's not like you either were born with it or you weren't, and if you weren't, well, too bad, right? No, these are things that we can learn.
But I'm also not gonna tell you to start building a spreadsheet today. As much as I love budgeting and love spreadsheets, that's not what today's about. You've probably tried that. You've probably listened to other podcasts. You've read books. You've tried budgeting apps, and they've worked for a week and a half, and then what?
So today I'm gonna give you one tiny challenge. Go ahead and go into your banking app and just look. Just scroll back through the last couple weeks and look at your transactions How do they make you feel? Don't judge them. You can't change them. Just notice them and notice how they make you feel Something I tell my clients all the time is that you can't fix what you're not paying attention to, right?
And most of us have never actually looked, like really looked at where our money's going and, or if we do, we've already decided that we're gonna feel bad about it before we even look at our banking app.
So my challenge for you today, give yourself five minutes, pull up your banking app, take a deep breath, and look. Feel whatever you might feel, and then worry about fixing it later. Take that first tiny step. I'm all about tiny steps and tiny wins And taking this one, taking this moment for yourself might feel like a huge step.
So again, just look. That's all you have to do today. Look, feel, fix later. And just remember, you're not alone. You're not alone in this.
And if you need some help, that is totally okay.
